Indonesia's
population is 253,609,643 with youth making up approximately 43 million
or 17.1% of this figure. Youth unemployment presents a major challenge
for Indonesia. Indonesian youth often do not possess strong educational
backgrounds. 50% of the Indonesian population has an elementary school
education, 40% have graduated from junior or senior high school, and
only 10% possess a college or university degree.
challenges facing Indonesian youth, in particular young women, are:
- Limited access to education (schooling often comes at a high cost,
transportation, accommodation, school supplies, and in many cases school
fees); - Limited household economic resources often
force children in poor families, most often girls, to leave school early
and begin working to help their families; - Quality and relevance of education do not meet job market standards;
- Graduates of local vocational schools and universities often lack the skills to effectively enter the workforce;
- Women are adversely affected in emergencies and are often unprepared
and lack resilience when faced with financial crises and natural
disasters;
Girls and young women often lack
self-confidence and rely on their male guardians, usually their fathers,
older brothers or husbands, for approval of decisions that affect their
future development, resilience, and empowerment, including economic
empowerment. The Bintang Muda project will support the government's
